While it may not seem it, grass blocks can actually be a bit of a rare thing to find in your inventory in Minecraft. That’s because you can’t just break a grass block and pick it up with any old tool. If you do, you’ll just get a dirt block. In this guide, we’ll talk you through how to break and pick up grass blocks, how to make grass grow in Minecraft, and a few tips on how to grow grass faster in Minecraft to boot.
Growing Grass in Minecraft
First things first, you’re going to need to find a way to break and pick up grass blocks. That’s because to make grass grow and spread, you need to place existing grass blocks by dirt blocks.
As we mentioned above though, breaking a grass block with any old tool will see it turn to a dirt block. Instead, you’ll need to get a tool with the Silk Touch enchantment.
Getting Silk Touch Enchantment for Mining Grass Blocks
Silk Touch allows you to mine blocks and keep them in their current form, rather than them turning into their usual dropped item variants. It also allows you to gather items that are fragile like glass or ice, and mine and pick up diamond and coal ores, rather than the end-products.
This same rule applies for grass blocks. To get Silk Touch on any tool, simply follow the steps below. There is a bit of RNG involved in the process, so just keep rinse/repeating until you get Silk Touch as the level 30 enchantment.
Mining Grass Blocks With Silk Touch Tools
To mine grass blocks now you have a Silk Touch enchanted tool, simply equip it and break a grass block.
Placing Grass Blocks & Growing More Grass
Take your grass blocks over to where you want to grow grass, and place them around the outskirts of the area, like so.
After one in-game day, your grass should begin growing. It’ll be a slow spread as it’ll move to one dirt block that is touching the grass blocks you’ve placed.
Tips for Growing Grass Faster in Minecraft
To make grass grow even faster in Minecraft, it’s often been suggested that you need to raise the light level in the surrounding area. The best and easiest way of doing this is to place torches by the grass blocks that you want to grow.
This can be used to help you grow grass down stairways and underground, too.
