Minecraft Dungeons was released late last month and, although we found it to be a middling adventure, it has gotten some fanfare for its ability to capture the source material while embarking into a new genre. Even though you’d be hard-pressed to find something that matches it perfectly, there are plenty of games that closely resemble the gameplay and genre. Here are five games like Minecraft Dungeons if you’re looking for something similar.

The Diablo Series

Clearly, Minecraft Dungeons was inspired by the gameplay and dungeon-crawling of this set of hack-and-slash titles, all the way down to the way the mini-map overlays on the screen.

Whether you decide to kick it old school with the original or Diablo II, prefer the more current-gen iteration in Diablo III, or want to wait for the upcoming release of Diablo IV, you won’t be disappointed if you like what you played in Minecraft Dungeons.

Although the religious plot and setting make this a bit more of a hardcore, M-rated option, with some amped up difficulty as well, you cannot deny the deep similarities between this entire group of games and the Minecraft spin-off.

Path of Exile

Considered the torch-bearer of what many fans wanted Diablo to develop into, Path of Exile offers nearly identical gameplay, but in a more online-oriented, free-to-play package.

With new leagues launched regularly, containing new character builds, loot, and areas to explore, this ever-changing title is one that fans of sinking hundreds of hours into the same experience will be able to endlessly fall in love with.

As another M-rated experience, this may be a bit too much for those switching directly from Minecraft Dungeons, but the gameplay and style match across the board. Even if the aesthetic couldn’t be more different.

The Marvel Ultimate Alliance Series

Following suit with a more family-friendly option comes the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series. Again featuring the similar top-down, hack-and-slash gameplay, this one will let you fight as a number of your favorite superheroes.

Even though the original two were released more than a decade ago, they are currently available on current-gen hardware, along with the 2019 release of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, which is a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

The main difference here comes in the changing between the superhero cast of characters, where playing in groups is strongly suggested, but regardless of how you play, this one matches up quite well with Minecraft Dungeons.

Bastion

With more of an indie touch, Bastion offers a lot of the same sorts of gameplay you would want following Minecraft Dungeons. With world-class narration, an interesting story, and all the charm in the world, this is easily one title everyone should play, not just those looking for similar titles to Minecraft Dungeons.

Launching almost a decade ago, the developer —Supergiant Games— went on to create Transistor, Pyre, and more recently Hades. Currently available on all current-gen platforms, Bastion has become an indie classic.

Even though there is less of an emphasis on loot in this one, you will find yourself falling right into the satisfying gameplay loop and the incredible art style that brings it ever closer to feeling just like Minecraft Dungeons.

Minecraft

Alright, hear me out. As obvious as this may sound, Minecraft is very, very different from Minecraft Dungeons in so many ways. With crafting and building as the emphasis, Minecraft offers such a different experience that it might be hard to suggest in this list. However, all of what you can find in Minecraft Dungeons can also be found in the source material.

The block-laden graphics, fighting through hordes of zombies and skeletons, and even the enchanting can all be done (in different ways, of course) in the original Minecraft. Hell, you could even argue the looting could be replaced with Minecraft’s progression through the tool materials from wood to diamond and higher.

Obviously the change from being top-down to first-person will be a difference, but otherwise, you can have all the experiences in Minecraft Dungeons in Minecraft as well, even if you have to make up your own story rather than having one made for you.

And that wraps up our list of games like Minecraft Dungeons—we hope you enjoyed it! For more on Minecraft Dungeons, check out why we think it is a refreshingly lightweight looter title, as well as all our guides right here on Twinfinite.
