Far Cry New Dawn Story Summary

Arriving at Prosperity

As the title suggests, we’re going to be diving deep into the story of Far Cry New Dawn, so if you’re trying to avoid spoilers, you should probably turn away now. You’ve been warned.

17 years after the events of Far Cry 5, Hope County, Montana is now a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Project at Eden’s Gate has been disbanded, and the people have been trying to scrape together a living after the nuclear fallout. However, a new group of bandits called the Highwaymen have taken control of the land. They’re led by the twins Mickey and Lou, and this marks the start of Far Cry New Dawn.

Together with a man named Thomas Rush, the player character (known as Cap) and a group of other volunteers have arrived at Hope County to help rebuild, but they’re quickly waylaid by the Highwaymen.

After meeting Mickey and Lou, Rush manages to rescue the player by pushing them down a waterfall and allowing them to escape. Rush himself gets caught by the Highwaymen.

Upon waking up, Cap meets Carmina Rye, and they make their way back to Prosperity, the last bastion standing against the Highwaymen. Together, they devise a plan to rescue Rush from the coal mines, and they also start rebuilding and upgrading the camp facilities and bringing together specialists.

Things don’t go as planned though, as the Highwaymen soon catch wind of what the group is up to. Mickey and Lou show up at Prosperity to threaten Cap, and warn them to stay out of their way, or they’ll make everyone believe that their help is a curse instead of a blessing.

After a particularly harsh attack on Prosperity, Carmina suggests that they turn to the cult New Eden for help against the Highwaymen. Kim Rye is reluctant at first, as she refuses to work with Joseph Seed, considering all the harm he had done to Hope County years ago. She relents, though, and Cap goes on ahead to find New Eden.

Far Cry New Dawn Story Explained

Working With New Eden

When Cap journeys north to find New Eden, they find themselves on a small island where they start seeing visions of Joseph himself. Cap is then forced to wander around the island, and listens as Joseph explains what his role used to be in Hope County.

We eventually reach the bunker where the Deputy had first begun their journey in Far Cry 5, and though we don’t find out what happened to them, we do get a glimpse at Joseph’s Diary.

In the diary, Joseph mentions that the Deputy was completely wracked with guilt and he had considered ending their life. Instead, Joseph decided to ‘forgive’ the Deputy and gradually try to show him God’s plan. Cap finds the book, The Word of Joseph, in the bunker, and takes it to New Eden’s hideout in an effort to win their trust.

At the hideout, we learn that Joseph isn’t there, and his son Ethan is in charge of the group. Ethan is a rather power-hungry leader, and tells Cap to journey further north to bring back irrefutable proof that Joseph is dead, just so that the group would stop clinging on to the belief that Joseph is a messiah and would listen to Ethan instead.

In exchange, Ethan promises to help Cap against the Highwaymen.

When Cap journeys north, they find Joseph, who shows him the secret of the island. Up north, there is a very special fruit that grants superhuman abilities to whoever eats it. The catch is that they have to be chosen by God. If not, anyone who eats it would be corrupted instead. Joseph grants this power to Cap, believing that they are the chosen one, and the two go back to New Eden.

Back there, Joseph assumes leadership once more, and Ethan feels betrayed. Joseph explains that it is not God’s plan for Ethan to be leader, and he is not meant to have the fruit. Joseph promises to help Cap with the Highwaymen.

Far Cry New Dawn Story Summary

Preparing Against the Twins

Back at Prosperity, we learn that Mickey and Lou have taken a number of people hostage, forcing Cap to run around an enemy compound to find them and disarm bombs that have been attached to them.

Finally, Cap comes face to face with Mickey and Lou, and we see that they’ve got Rush as well. Before we can do anything, they kill Rush with a shotgun blast to the head. Cap goes berserk and uses their newfound powers to fight the twins.

However, it’s not enough, and the power runs out before Cap can kill them. Mickey and Lou then decide to look for New Eden to find out more about this new power that Cap has.

Afterwards, Cap catches wind of a Highwaymen insider named Irwin, and they work together to infiltrate the enemy forces to find a way to get to Mickey and Lou. After going through a derby race and a fighting pit, Cap finally manages to attend a dinner with the Highwaymen top brass while in disguise.

Before Cap can kill them, they escape. Eventually, Cap tracks them down to the New Eden hideout where Mickey and Lou have torched the place. After a long, drawn-out battle, Cap is finally able to kill them both.

Before they die, Mickey thinks back to her childhood, where she and her sister had left their mother to follow their father. Their mother made her promise that they would never become like their dad, who left nothing but destruction and violence in their wake. Mickey feels that she failed her sister, but Lou says at least they had a ton of fun. Lou dies, and you have the option of either shooting Mickey or leaving her to bleed.

Finally, Cap goes up north again to find Joseph and Ethan. Ethan had sold New Eden out to the twins, and was now about to eat the forbidden fruit. But of course, he’s not the chosen one, so he gets corrupted and somehow turns into a monster.

Cap kills him, and Joseph begs them to kill him too, as he’s had enough of watching his family die. You can either shoot him or walk away. Back at Prosperity, Cap and Carmina go to visit Rush’s grave, and they have a beer to pay their respects.
