Full-time Memelord and part-time video game hero Sonic the Hedgehog announced today on his Twitter that SEGA will be selling “Barrel of Doom” mugs, and that they are available for pre-order to be delivered sometime in April.
The Barrel of Doom, for anyone that was born in the 2000s and has no idea what we’re talking about, is a part in Sonic 3’s Carnival Night Zone where players were brutally locked into an enclosed area, and where the only way to escape before getting timed out was to perfectly time a series of jumps to allow you to maneuver a barrel low enough for Sonic to slip through.
Inspired by Sonic 3's most challenging moment – Barrel of Doom Mugs are now available worldwide on the SEGA Shops!

At least, that’s what most normal IQ seven-year olds were conditioned to think they were supposed to do. The developers of Sonic 3 though, in their infinite cruelty, decided to slip in a new never before needed mechanic into that one section.
What you were actually supposed to do was press up and down on the d-pad to manually control the barrel which would allow you much more easily escape as long as you had at least rudimentary button timing pressing skills. Much easier for sure than the near impossible way of trying to get the barrel low enough with just jumps alone.
Allow this YouTuber to demonstrate the WRONG way of completing the Barrel of Doom, and struggle the same way that so many of us Genesis kids did so long ago. He eventually does figure it out at the end of the video, but sadly, so many young kids in the 90s were never able to see what was at the other end of that barrel.
I’ll buy a Barrel of Doom mug alright. I’ll fill it up with some beer, and then pour one out for all the homies that never got to experience Ice Cap Zone.
