All Norse Gods in God of War

Previous games in the God of War series have always been steeped in Greek mythology, but this time around, Sony Santa Monica is taking us to Midgard, the land of the legendary Norse gods. As you might expect, there are plenty of familiar names that pop up during the story. There are also a few lesser known names introduced in the game, but they all help to flesh out the game’s world and lore.

We’ve listed all of the Norse gods that appear in God of War down below. Do note that there are some major story spoilers here, so don’t read on if you haven’t played the game and want to go in completely fresh.

Odin: More commonly known as the Allfather, Odin himself doesn’t actually appear in the game, but he is the big bad guy who sends his family after Kratos and Atreus.

Thor: Thor is another antagonist in God of War, but he doesn’t show up until the very end of the game in an optional cutscene.

Baldur: Baldur serves as the primary antagonist for most of the story. He first shows up at Kratos’ house known only as the Stranger, and continues to hunt him in Midgard.

Freya: Freya is the witch that you meet in the woods after reaching the mountain peak in Midgard. It is later revealed that she is actually married to Odin, and she’s also the mother of Baldur.

Magni and Modi: Magna and Modi aren’t exactly the most popular gods in Norse mythology, but they’re the sons of Thor, and the appear in the game to help Baldur hunt down Kratos and Atreus.

Loki: This is a bit of a surprise, but the final scene in the game reveals that Faye had originally wanted to name her son Loki. However, Kratos objected and gave him a Spartan name instead. And thus, Atreus was born. Since Atreus is half-god and half-Giant, plus the fact that he was supposed to be named Loki, it’s pretty safe to assume that he’s going to have a much bigger role to play in future adventures.
