He’s a Pirate

First and foremost, Edward Kenway may be the coolest Assassin of the series simply because he’s a pirate. While he does join the honorable order of Assassins at some point, Kenway is first and foremost a pirate, and that’s present in everything he does. He’s always looking for a big score, and always obsessed with treasure and profit. Kenway started out as a privateer for the Royal Navy of Britain, before the life of fame and fortune lured him away.

Kenway also puts the best of both worlds to use as he pillages and plunders vessels from both the English, Spanish, and more. Even after his intentions become a bit more focused, Kenway never drops some of his pirate-like tendencies. He’s certainly the most swashbuckling and over the top of all the Assassins, even in the face of characters like Ezio and Jacob.

He Looks Out For Himself and His Crew

The safety and wellbeing of himself and his crew is of the utmost importance to Edward Kenway. As he started into a life of piracy, Kenway was concerned only with gaining riches and a name for himself. Over the course of his career, however, he befriended many others and gained numerous allies.

As his quest for riches absorbed his life, Kenway started to lose many of those friends, before waking up to reality and realizing what’s truly important. He built a crew along with the help of his new first mate Adewale, and was always there to watch others back’s. He was also close friends with not one, but two famous pirates, Blackbeard and James Kidd. Both prominent figures pass away unfortunately, but the former gives his life for Edward while the latter dies in his arms wishing for his redemption.

He’s a Versatile Fighter Who’s Deadly In Battle

Every protagonist in the Assassin’s Creed series is a deadly warrior, but Kenway really takes the cake in battle. He’s a relentless and unforgiving opponent that beats his enemies back with a flurry of attacks, wielding a cutlass in each hand. The fighting style Kenway employs is a combination of sheer brute force along with agility and grace.

He also has access to much of the gear that other Assassins use like rope darts and hidden blades, on top of new equipment like the blowpipe. Whatever the situation is, Edward Kenway always has a solution; climbing and swinging from ropes in ship combat, sneaking through rainforests and eliminating enemies silently, or taking the helm of his ship and blowing apart enemy vessels.

As if all this wasn’t enough, Kenway carries four pistols on his body. This give him the ability to instantly gun down four enemies at once, then jump into battle straight after. This is one Assassin you absolutely do not want to face in battle.

He Has Personality and Smarts, and Inspires Loyalty

Edward Kenway has one other aspect working in his favor over the other Assassins: personality. With the exception of maybe Ezio or Jacob, no other character in the series has as many quips and comebacks for every situation as he does. At his core, Kenway has an adventurous spirit and he lives for a life of excitement and battle. That fact is perfectly clear in Black Flag, as he revels in the life he lives the entire time.

When Kenway is in his element he’s unstoppable, and this is something that other characters see as well. Throughout Black Flag, he inspires confidence and loyalty in others, who’ll all give their lives for him. The legendary pirate Blackbeard fights alongside Kenway, not to mention the romance that he begins to develop with James Kidd aka Mary Read. Of course, the most telling fact might be the loyal crew of his on the Jackdaw, and the stalwart Assassin Adewale. Kenway draws people to him, and in the Assassin’s Creed universe, he played an integral part in history.
