Dark Souls III has a mechanic known as Ember, which allows you to obtain the power of a Lord of Cinder. Essentially it grants you more HP and a bit more oomph when attacking and works just like Humanity and Human Effigy worked. You’ll need Ember in order to summon in the game, so it’s definitely something you’ll want to look into.
The most basic way to obtain Ember is to defeat one of the bosses in the game. Upon victory, you will automatically be kindled. Your character will glow and the edges of your armor will be singed with ember as ash flows from you when you move. Of course, death removes this boon, so you’ll need other ways to get it back between boss fights.
There are several ways to obtain the Ember consumable throughout your playthrough:
- From red-eyed enemies: These are more powerful versions of your standard enemies, and they have a slight chance of dropping Ember.
- Finding them on the ground: There aren’t too many scattered throughout the world, but keeping your eyes peeled can net you a few of these coveted items.
- Purchasing them: The Shrine Handmaid at Firelink Shrine sells them for 2,500 Souls a pop. She only has three, but every time you bring her some Umbral Ash, she obtains a few more for you to purchase. Greirat also sells a few Embers, and will obtain more after his trips.
Remember, these items are very valuable, and will help in your fight to link the flame.
