Spelunky 2 has its fair share of secrets to uncover, not least of which being the use for the Drill in the Volcana area. Figuring out how to use it and what you need to do so on your own can be an hours-long hassle though, so we’re here to help you along with a guide on how to use the Volcana Drill in Spelunky 2.

How to Use the Volcana Drill in Spelunky 2

To use the Volcana Drill in Spelunky 2, you’ll first need to find the Udjat Eye in the game’s opening area.

This is done by tracking down a Gold Key and then using it to open the Gold Chest found in one of the cave men’s dwellings, which will contain the Eye. The positioning of both is randomized each time you start a run, so you’ll need to explore and use the proper resources to find them both. More on how you can do so can be found in our guide on the process here.

Once you have the Eye, you’ll then need to make your way to the Volcana area’s latter stages. Shortly after entering them, you should see the Drill in the upper middle section of the level, positioned to drive down through the ground.

Look for a purple block on one of its sides. Jump up onto it, and a prompt to interact with a slot by pressing R1 will trigger so long as the Eye is in your inventory. Press the button, and the Eye will then be used to activate the Drill, opening up a path further down through the level which leads to a new exit.

Where the New Exit Leads

By taking this new exit, you can enter the Vampire Castle section of Spelunky 2.

It’s just like the first game’s vampire-infested section, complete with blood-sucking enemies that’ll pursue you throughout and a seemingly endless stream of bats to kill or avoid.

However, it’s worth the trouble, as the area contains the Crown item needed to extract Excalibur in the game’s Tide Pool Zone. Excalibur is needed to progress toward some of Spelunky 2’s secret stages, and can be used as a one-hit-kill weapon besides.

Hopefully this cleared up how to use the Volcana Drill in Spelunky 2. For more on the game, check out some of our other guides on hot topics like how to get the Kapala and whether or not you can cure the Curse ailment.
