Super Mario 3D All-Stars is here, and one of the games included in the collection is the classic Super Mario 64. Whether you’re playing this game for the very first time or reliving it from when it first released in 1996, you might be wondering how to get power-ups for Mario such as the Metal Cap. Here’s everything you need to know about how to get the Metal Cap in Super Mario 64.

You’ll need the Metal Cap if you’re trying to get all 120 Power Stars in the game. Wearing it makes Mario temporarily invincible and heavy, which helps to get certain stars.

How to Get Metal Cap in Super Mario 64

On certain courses, you will see the transparent outlines of green ‘!’ boxes that cannot be hit when you jump under them. These will eventually become the boxes that you can get the Metal Cap out of, but there’s something you have to do before this is possible.

The first place you have to go is Hazy Maze Cave, which is located in the basement of the Mushroom Castle. To enter this course, find the room with the large dark pool of liquid and jump inside.

In the Hazy Maze cave, the path forks immediately. Take the left path, long jump over the gap, and head through the door.

Follow the path along the right wall, jump the small gap, and head up the slope where the the balls are rolling down, and head through the next door.

In this room, take the elevator platform all the way down. You’ll see a transparent green ‘!’ box here, but ignore it for now. Instead, go down the slope, into the water, and ride Dorrie’s head towards the double doors on the far side of the room.

Through these double doors, you’ll see another dark pool of liquid. Jump inside that, and you’ll find yourself in a secret room called the Metal Cap Switch Course.

Follow the path here, taking a left when it forks. Eventually, you’ll see a giant green ‘!’ switch. Jump on that switch. Now, every green ‘!’ block you find in any course will be solid, and you’ll be able to hit it to get a temporary Metal Cap.

The Metal Cap makes Mario invincible and heavy for a short amount of time, meaning he will be able to sink deep into the water. He won’t be able to perform long jumps or high jumps, though. Use this new power to help with puzzles to get more Power Stars.

That’s everything you need to know about how to get the Metal Cap in Super Mario 64. Be sure to check back with Twinfinite for more guides for all of the games in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection.
