Monster Hunter Rise is the latest entry in Capcom’s popular action game series, and it features a lot of the same mechanics fans are used to from previous games. You can hunt monsters by either killing them or laying traps for them, and both have their benefits. If you’re wondering whether you should kill or capture a monster in Monster Hunter Rise, here’s what you need to know.

Monster Hunter Rise Kill vs. Capture

As mentioned previously, both methods of hunting a monster come with their own benefits. Killing a monster allows you to carve it up after you’ve defeated it, and killing also takes a longer time, which could give you more potential opportunities to break monster parts for rarer resources.

On the other hand, capturing a monster requires a bit of prep work before the hunt actually starts, but this method of hunting can be extremely useful if you’re up against a particularly tough beast you might not be ready for just yet as it’ll cut the fight short. You simply have to craft traps and Tranq Bombs, fight the beast till it’s weakened, then trap it and capture it.

Essentially, if you want shorter hunts, go for the capture. However, if you’re looking to farm specific parts from a monster, then you’ll need to dive into the Hunter’s Notes in Monster Hunter Rise and figure out what you need.

Once you’ve encountered and fought a monster properly for the first time, the Hunter’s Notes will include detailed drop rate information, including your chances of getting certain parts by killing or capturing. Knowing which parts you need to craft a weapon or armor piece will allow you to decide whether you need to kill or capture a monster.

How to Capture

Now that you know how to make a more informed decision about killing vs. capturing in Monster Hunter Rise, let’s go over the basics of how to actually catch a beast.

First, you need to craft either a Pitfall Trap or a Shock Trap. The former will last longer but only works on grounded foes, while the latter is effective for a shorter period of time but will work on both grounded and aerial foes. After weakening a monster enough, your Palico will let you know that it’s ripe for the capture, and a blue icon will show up underneath the monster icon in the top right corner of the screen.

Lay the trap, wait for the monster to step into it, then hit it with Tranq Bombs. You usually need two to capture it successfully and complete the hunt.

That’s all you need to know about whether you should kill or capture in Monster Hunter Rise. Be sure to check our guide wiki for more tips and information on the game.
