How to Get Home Defense Perk & Why You Want it in Fallout 76

Fallout 76‘s perk card system enables players to fine-tune their character’s stats and abilities in order to match their playstyle. Plus, you’re free to equip and change perk cards from your overall deck whenever you see fit. The Home Defense perk card is quite sought after right now, and is perfect for stealth players. Here’s how to get Home Defense perk and why you want it in Fallout 76.

First things first, let’s run you through what you need to do to get the Home Defense perk card. Like many of the other perk cards in Fallout 76, Home Defense is unlocked once you reach a certain level. Specifically, for Home Defense, you need to reach level 22 in order to unlock it.

Once you’ve reached level 22 and are able to pick a perk card, you’ll want to press Circle on PS4 or B on Xbox One to open your Pip-Boy, then Triangle or Y to access the Perks screen. You’ll want to choose to pick a perk card from the Agility stat, and then choose Home Defense. Now all you need to do is equip it and you’re all set.

For those unaware, the Home Defense perk card allows players to craft and disarm better, advanced, and expert traps and turrets dependent on its level. Level 3 Home Defense enables you to craft and disarm expert traps and turrets, while level 1 is just the slightly better ones.

Why Home Defense Is So Popular in Fallout 76

Chances are, you’re here because you’ve heard all of the buzz about Home Defense, but may not be entirely clued up on why it’s so great. I mean, unless you’re a trap or turret fanatic, it’s not really all that game-changing. Well, it’s because Fallout 76 has one particularly massive exploit that enables players to quickly grind out XP by disarming traps over and over again.

In the video we’ve included down below, you can see that, with the Home Defense perk equipped, you’re able to disarm the same trap over and over again in order to farm experience. It’s not a whole lot of XP you’re earning each time, but that quickly racks up when you’re spamming the X button on PS4 or A button on Xbox One to disarm traps over and over.

It’s worth noting, however, that this is likely to be patched out in an upcoming update for Fallout 76. Further, there’re no guarantees that this will always work, and some traps, such as the Flamethrower trap, require you to have Home Defense at level 2, and other perk cards equipped, such as Fireproof in the example of the Flamethrower trap.

And there you have everything you need to know about how to get Home Defense perk in Fallout 76 and why you probably want it. For more tips, tricks, and guides for your adventures across Appalachia, be sure to check out our ever-expanding Fallout 76 guide wiki.
