As you play through RimWorld you’ll eventually want to start construction on better facilities, and that will require Steel. Steel isn’t super important early on however, so many players may not have a stockpile by the time in the game when they will absolutely need it (closer to the end of the game). Luckily, you will be able to find some out in the world, you’ll just have to be aware of all of the ways.
There are a few ways through which you can obtain steel so you can put it to use. The first way is to simply mine it. You’ll need to locate Compacted Steel Rocks in RimWorld to do so, though, as this resource won’t turn up from just any old rock. They look a bit like marble, so that should help you spot them. Just don’t stop searching after a bit of bad luck.
Another method is to deconstruct things made out of the resource, such as conduits, mechanoids, or walls. While some are able to be deconstructed early on, others will require a bit of research, so keep that in mind. You won’t get the full amount that was needed to construct them in the first place, but any little bit helps when you have a specific project in mind.
You can also smelt items in order to acquire Steel. When you find debris, keep it close until you construct the facilities required to melt them down.
That’s all there is to it. Before you know it, you’ll have a metal colony.
